Creating Video Clip and The Tools
To create a video clip:
-
Browse or search for the video from which you want to create a clip.
-
Position the mouse pointer over the asset’s
Asset Menu button, and select
Show Storyboard.Note: If a storyboard was not created for the video, you cannot create a clip from the video.
-
Locate the keyframe that represents the point at which you want the clip to start. If necessary, use the navigation arrows to scroll to another page.
-
Click the IN button at the bottom of the keyframe.
The time code of the selected keyframe is placed in the IN box at the top of the
page. -
Locate the keyframe that represents the point at which you want the clip to end. If necessary, use the navigation arrows to scroll to another page.
-
Click the OUT button at the bottom of the keyframe.
The time code of the selected keyframe is placed in the OUT box at the top of the page.
Note: The end time must be later than the start time.
-
Click Save
to display the Save Clip page, which enables you to enter property values for the clip. The values that you assign will assist other users in searching for and identifying the asset. -
The model to which the clip is assigned determines the properties available in the Choose Properties page. By default, the clip inherits the model to which its parent asset is assigned.
-
If necessary, change the Advanced Sharing Options.
-
In the Video Clip Name box, enter the name of the new clip.
-
Assign values to the available properties as necessary.
Note: A red asterisk next to a box indicates that an entry in the box is required. Also, you can click Clear at
the bottom of the page to clear all property values. -
Do one of the following:
-
Click Finish at the bottom of the page to save the clip and return to the storyboard of the asset from which the clip was created.
The clip is saved without a classification, and therefore will not be displayed when a category search is performed.
-
Click Assign Asset Categories if you want to categorize the asset.
-
Video clips are created using the storyboard of the asset from which you want to create the clip. When a clip is created, it becomes a child asset of the parent, or complete video from which it was created.
Tools for Making Video Clips in AVI or MPEG Format
Introduction
This webpage will be helpful to those who are interested in creating video files in their computer. To do this, one needs to use a video capture device to capture video clips from a VHS source. This will then transfer video files on to the computer allowing on to view them from the computer monitor. In addition, the video file can also be converted into a different format. Formats like MPEG can be used to create video cd’s.
Requirements and procedure for capturing video clips from VHS
source into the computer.
Hardware required:
- computer(133 mhz or fater recommanded)
- video capture device or videocard with video capture capability.(I have the ELSA ERAZOR Video Capture Combo Card)
- cable to connect VHS to video capture device
- soundcard with audio input(needed if you would like your video file to include sound as well)
Software required:
- Video capture software that came with the video capture card
-
Xing mpeg encoder

Procedures:
-
either rca or s-video cable.(s-video recommanded for clearer picture
quality) -
Connect VCR’s audio output to sound card with rca cables. Use one cable
for mono, and two for stereo quality. -
Play the desired VHS source and run the software on the computer that is responsible for enabling capture card to start the video capturing task. It will ask you where to save the clip, select a desired directory in your harddrive to save the clip. The video clip will be in AVI format.
-
When the desired clip is finished, disable the software to stop the video capturing.
-
you can view the AVI clip in Windows since AVI is a type of Window’s multimedia file.
Compressing AVI format into MPEG compression format
When the source is captured in AVI format, the captured uncompressed AVI file will be very large(approxiamately 100MB per minute). This can easily eat up your harddirve if you do not compress it into a smaller file. The easiest way is to convert it into MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) format. This will save you alot of harddrive space since the compression ratio is about 10 to 1(100MB will be compressed into 10 MB), without losing picture quality. There are many software outthere that will do the compression. The one that I use is
Xing Mpeg Encoder by
Xing Technology. The encoding process takes about three times the video length. If you don’t want to go through this tidious encoding process, you can just buy the video capture device that will do Mpeg encoding in real time. In other words, you will be capturing video clips in Mpeg instead of AVI format. The drawback to this is that picture quality will not be as good as being captured with AVI initially. Also, these Mpeg capture cards runs between $300 to $1000(hope this price doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket) in comparison with sub-$100 AVI capture cards. The cheapest Mpeg card that I can think of is Snazzi by Dazzle(around $300).
Creating Video CD
Besides saving harddrive space for compressing AVI into Mpeg format, you can also create Video CD since it uses Mpeg format. Some people like to convert their home videos tapes into video cd, since its quality does not degarade like tapes do.
hardware requaired:
- cd writer
- blank CDR
Software required:

Procedure:
- To to Adaptec easy CD creator and open up Video CD creator.
- Go to edit and select add item.
- select clips that you would like to include in the CD, you will be able
to record about 60 minutes of video in once CD. - Once selected, the selected clip will be in the right box. Just drag it
to the left box which is the content of the Video CD layout. - Go to Video CD and select Create CD from layerout.
- Start making Video CD.
Once finished making video, you can view it in your computer using software like Xing’s Mpeg Player, or you can view it in your TV but you’ll need either a Video CD player, or DVD player that also support Mpeg deocoding. I have Sony DVD player and it plays Video CD perfectly.
Creating Video Clip Using Windows Movie Maker
Clips are automatically created if you select the Create clips for video files check box when you import a video file into Movie Maker. If the check box is not selected, the video is imported as a single continuous clip, rather than as a series of shorter clips. Don’t worry; you can use the Movie Maker clip detection feature to pide a video file into smaller, more manageable clips.
To import a video file that you have already saved to your computer and automatically create short clips
1.
Under Capture Video, click Import Video.

2.
On the Import File dialog box, select the Create clips for
video files check box (it is selected by default). Click your video
file, and then click Import.
3.
Movie Maker creates clips from your video file and adds them to a new
collection.
If you downloaded a video from your camera but chose not to
break it into clips, it’s not too late to make clips. In the Movie Maker
Collection pane, right-click the video. Then click Create Clips.

Now you can drag the clips from the collection to your storyboard to
create your movie.
Trim video clips
When you watch your video clips, you might notice that the camera tends to
shake at the beginning and end of each clip. That’s because you’re pressing
the record or stop button on your camera. Don’t worry—nobody can hold the
camera perfectly steady while they start and stop recording.
Fortunately, you can fix the problem with Movie Maker by trimming the
beginnings and ends of clips. In fact, you can trim clips down to just a few
seconds each—that’s the best way to make a fun, fast-paced movie. You can
choose to either trim clips in your collection or trim clips on your
storyboard. You should trim clips in your collection if you plan to use the
shortened clip in other movies. For information about how to trim clips in
your collection
If you don’t want to change the clips in your collection, you can trim them
while they are on your storyboard.
To trim video clips
1.
Drag clips from your collection to the storyboard at the bottom of the
window.
2.
Select the clip you want to trim. Then click the Play button on
the Preview Monitor.

3.
Let the clip play until it gets to the point where you want to trim
it. Then click the Split Clip button on the Preview Monitor.
This cuts your clip into two separate clips at the current point in the
video and adds the new clips to your storyboard.
Note: If you
plan to
use transitions, leave an extra second at the beginning and end of
each clip to allow the clips to overlap.
4.
Delete the portion of the clip you no longer need by right-clicking it
and then clicking Delete.

Repeat this process for each clip. You can split clips several times to
use more than one moment from a clip. If you do a lot of editing, you
might find it easier to use the timeline view, which shows you how long
each clip will play. To use the timeline view, click the Show Timeline
button.
